Is the Pandemic Causing You Anxiety Related Hair Loss?
Recently I’ve been finding more strands of hair everywhere more than usual. On my pillowcase, on the floor, in the shower drain. Of course! This is probably because of all the stress we’ve been dealing with. Is anxiety to blame?
You’ve probably heard about a potential correlation between stress and hair loss, but is it true? It’s normal to be worried about how stress can affect your body if you’re feeling frazzled by work or overwhelmed by emotional occurrences such as toxic news on social media or personal problems. Here’s what you need to hear about stress and hair loss.
Can Anxiety Cause Hair Loss?
Anxiety and stress are similar symptoms, but anxiety can be a life-long fight. According to research, stress and anxiety-induced stress may also lead to various hair loss conditions. Alopecia Areata is a form of alopecia that occurs in patches. Large clumps of hair can fall out for no apparent cause, resulting in patches of hair loss.
Not only do stress and anxiety lead to hair loss, but they are also related to the three conditions mentioned below.
Telogen effluvium
This is a common reason for temporary hair loss. Stress can cause hair follicles to enter a “resting” state, in which they do not grow new hair strands. Hair will fall out more quickly over time, even if you’re washing, combing, or touching it.
Telogen effluvium may also be caused by inadequate nutrition and hormonal variations.
Trichotillomania
If you find yourself literally tearing out your hair when you are stressed or tense, this may be a symptom of trichotillomania. People with this psychological disorder cope with negative feelings such as stress and anxiety by removing hair from their scalps, faces, and other parts of their bodies. It is most common in adolescent females.
Alopecia areata
The immune system of your body attacks your hair follicles in this state, causing your hair to fall out. Alopecia areata can cause hair to thin in some cases, but it can also cause bald spots in others. Hair will regrow and then fall out over time. Doctors aren’t sure what causes alopecia areata, but genetics could play a role. Although it is not exacerbated by stress, alopecia areata can be very painful for someone suffering.
Summary
It is normal for a certain amount of hair to fall out every day. People usually lose up to 100 hairs each day.
If a person notices that they are losing more hair than usual, they may have an underlying condition. One of the most recommended solutions is taking biotin supplements. However, in extreme cases, they should see a doctor and seek advice on what the best treatment options are.
